How to Cancel Planet Fitness Before the Annual Fee
Quick answer
You can cancel Planet Fitness online now. Log in at planetfitness.com or the PF app, open your membership settings, and choose the cancel option; it takes a few minutes. Have your key-tag number handy and save the confirmation email. Prefer a human? Cancel at your home club's front desk with photo ID. Either way, get it done by the 10th of the month to stop that month's bill.
If the last guide you read said Planet Fitness only accepts cancellations in person or by certified letter, it's out of date. Since May 2025, every Planet Fitness location lets members cancel online, from the website or the app. The letter and the front desk still work, and sometimes they're the better call, but you no longer have to start there.
The method was never the expensive part anyway. The money lives in two deadlines: the 10th for your monthly dues, and the 25th of the month before your annual-fee month for the $49 annual fee. All three ways to cancel are below, then both dates.
Planet Fitness at a glance
| Item | Detail (as of September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Classic membership | $15 per month |
| PF Black Card | $24.99 per month; a $29.99 price announced in November 2025 was later paused, per August 2026 reports, with no new date set |
| Annual fee | $49 on both tiers, once a year, on a date set by your join date |
| Billing date for dues | The 17th of each month |
| Deadline to stop a month's dues | Cancellation in by the 10th |
| Deadline to skip the annual fee | Received by the 25th of the month before your annual-fee month |
| 12-month commitment buyout | $58 |
| Who actually bills you | ABC Fitness Solutions ("PLANET FIT" or "ABC*" on statements) |
| Refunds | None documented; the deadlines decide what you pay |
| Last verified | 2026-09-05 |
Prices are the standard US baseline. Clubs are franchised, so a few locations vary slightly.
Can you really cancel Planet Fitness online?
Yes, and it's chain-wide. Planet Fitness rolled out online cancellation across the system in the first half of 2025, targeting May 14. By the August 6, 2025 earnings call, CEO Colleen Keating confirmed that members at all locations can cancel online, through both the website and the app.
The company did this voluntarily. The federal "Click to Cancel" rule that would have required it was struck down by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025, before it took effect, and Planet Fitness kept its online option anyway, calling it "the right thing to do." As of early September 2026, it's still in place.
That's why so much advice on this topic is stale. Plenty of guides, including some dated 2026, still say online cancellation is "only at some clubs" or "not in the app." That was true mid-rollout. It isn't anymore.
How do I cancel Planet Fitness online?
- Log in at planetfitness.com, or open the PF app and sign in.
- Open "My Account", then your membership details.
- Choose the cancel option. Members report it under wording like "Manage Membership", then "Cancel Membership"; the exact labels shift a little between the site and the app, so follow whatever cancel path your membership screen shows.
- Follow the prompts and confirm.
- Save everything. Screenshot the final screen, and keep the confirmation, which members report arriving by email within 24 to 72 hours.
One catch: if you're inside a 12-month commitment, the online flow may not let you finish, since early exits carry a $58 buyout, and you may be routed to your club to settle it instead. If the option never appears for you, the desk and the letter below always work.
A note for iPhone users: you won't find Planet Fitness under Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions. Dues are billed by the club's billing partner, ABC Fitness Solutions, not through the App Store, so there's nothing to cancel on your phone.
How do I cancel in person at the club?
- Go to your home club, the location where your membership is registered. Other clubs will turn you away.
- Bring photo ID.
- Ask the front desk for the cancellation form, fill it out, and sign it.
- Before you leave, ask for a copy of the signed form or a printed receipt. A verbal "you're all set" is not proof of anything.
If you moved away, you have two easier outs than a road trip. Cancel online, which ignores geography. Or transfer to a nearby club instead: transfers are free through your online account, provided you've been at your current home club about 90 days, haven't transferred in the last 90, owe nothing, and pay monthly rather than paid-in-full. The new club's rate may apply.
How do I cancel Planet Fitness by mail?
A letter is the slowest path, but it's the right one when you can't reach your home club and the online option isn't showing up, or when you want a paper trail that doesn't depend on anyone's memory. Address it to your home club's street address, not corporate headquarters.
Include all of this:
- Your full name, exactly as it appears on the membership.
- Your membership ID (the key-tag number, also shown in the app).
- The address on file, plus your phone and email.
- Your home club location.
- One clear sentence: "I am canceling my membership effective immediately."
- The date and your handwritten signature. Unsigned requests get rejected.
Some guides suggest adding your date of birth or the last four digits of the card on file to help match your account. That's optional as far as we can verify; if you include card digits, the last four only, never the full number.
Send it certified mail with a return receipt, and keep the letter copy, the mailing receipt, and the signed green card. Planet Fitness sources describe deadlines by when a request is received, not postmarked, and processing can take up to 7 business days, so mail at least two weeks ahead of your target date.
What are the ways you cannot cancel?
Worth listing, because these are the attempts that bounce:
- Not by phone. Clubs and the corporate office both decline phone cancellations.
- Not by email.
- Not by chat or social media message.
- Not through a third-party app or service. Planet Fitness and its biller act only on requests that come from you, through the three paths above.
The two deadlines that decide what you pay
Planet Fitness bills monthly dues on the 17th. To stop a month's charge, your cancellation has to be in by the 10th of that month. Cancel on the 11th through the 17th and you'll pay one more month while the cancellation processes.
The annual fee is the bigger trap. It's $49 on both tiers, billed once a year on a date set by your join date, typically first appearing about eight weeks after signup. To skip that year's fee, your cancellation must be received by the 25th of the month before your annual-fee month. Your exact date is in the app or member portal under billing, or the front desk can look it up.
One honesty note: Planet Fitness doesn't publish the 10th, the 25th, or the $58 buyout on any public page we could verify directly. All three figures are consistent across multiple independent guides, so treat them as the planning baseline, and confirm your own billing dates in the app before you cut it close.
Worth knowing
Two dates, two charges. Be in by the 10th or you pay one more month of dues on the 17th. And the $49 annual fee is only avoided if your cancellation is received by the 25th of the month before your annual-fee month.
On a 12-month commitment plan, canceling early adds a $58 buyout fee on top of the timing rules. If you're near the end of the commitment, compare $58 against the dues remaining before you decide when to send it.
What happens after you cancel?
Your proof depends on the path: the confirmation email or number (plus your screenshot) for online, the copy of the signed form or receipt for in-person, and the certified-mail trio for the letter. Keep whichever one you have.
Then watch your next one or two statements. Planet Fitness charges appear as "PLANET FIT", "ABC*", or "ABC FINANCIAL", because billing runs through ABC Fitness Solutions under an agreement that runs through 2027. Check the 17th, and your annual-fee date if it's close.
If a balance is left behind, Planet Fitness routes delinquent accounts to Aldous & Associates, a Utah law firm that handles gym collections, and demand letters follow. Member reports are mixed on whether Aldous goes on to report gym debts to the credit bureaus, but a reported collection can sit on a credit report for up to 7 years. Don't test it. Cancel cleanly and keep the proof.
Tip
Keep your cancellation confirmation for at least a year: the email from an online cancel, or your copy of the signed form. If a stray charge shows up later, that one document resolves it faster than any phone call.
What if the club makes it hard?
Most Planet Fitness cancellations are uneventful now, which is the point of the online option. If yours isn't: a missing online button means the desk or the letter, and a desk that won't cooperate means the letter plus an escalation. Our guide to canceling any subscription has the ladder and the scripts. Charged after canceling anyway? The refund playbook covers how to ask and what usually works. Stopping the payment at your bank is a last resort only: the membership stays open underneath and the balance keeps growing.
While you're in a canceling mood, it's a good moment for a full subscription audit. Gym dues are rarely the only quiet charge on a statement.
Gym charges are easy to miss because they don't say "gym": Planet Fitness shows up as "PLANET FIT" or "ABC FINANCIAL". ReNood reads a screenshot of your statement, no bank login, and flags recurring charges like these so you can see what else is renewing. Cancel this one, then check the list.

Can I cancel Planet Fitness online now?
Yes. Planet Fitness rolled out online cancellation to every location by mid-2025, through both the website and the app, and confirmed it company-wide on its August 2025 earnings call. As of early September 2026 it's still available. Guides saying in-person or letter only predate the rollout; if the button is missing from your account, use your home club or certified mail.
How much is the Planet Fitness cancellation fee?
There's no fee to cancel a standard no-commitment membership. On a 12-month commitment plan, ending early costs a $58 buyout. The real costs are timing costs: miss the 10th and you pay one more month of dues, and miss the 25th of the month before your annual-fee month and you pay that year's $49 annual fee.
How do I avoid the Planet Fitness annual fee?
Get your cancellation in so it's received by the 25th of the month before your annual-fee month. The fee is $49 on both tiers, billed yearly on a date tied to your join date, usually first charged about eight weeks after signup. Find your date in the app under billing, or ask the front desk, then work backward from the 25th.
Can I cancel Planet Fitness by phone?
No. Clubs and the corporate office both decline phone cancellations, and email and chat requests bounce too. The three paths that work: online through the website or app, in person at your home club, or a signed letter sent certified mail to your home club's street address.
What if I moved away from my home club?
Cancel online; it works no matter where you live now. Or keep the membership and transfer it: free through your online account if you've been at your current club about 90 days, haven't transferred recently, and owe nothing. Otherwise, send a signed cancellation letter by certified mail to your old home club's street address.
