How to Cancel LA Fitness Without Getting Billed Again

Quick answer

There's no cancel button for LA Fitness. Log in at lafitness.com, open "My LA Fitness", go to "Account Information", and print the Cancellation Form. Send it by certified mail to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619, postmarked at least 5 business days before your billing date, or hand it to your club's Operations Manager in person. Keep every receipt, and cancel any personal training contract separately.

LA Fitness makes you work for this one. There's a specific form, a specific mailbox, a specific employee, and a deadline measured in business days. None of it is complicated once you can see the whole map, so here it is, along with the news that the FTC is now suing over this exact process.

Why is canceling LA Fitness so hard?

Hard enough that the federal government took it to court. On August 20, 2025, the FTC sued Fitness International, LLC and Fitness & Sports Clubs, LLC, the companies behind LA Fitness, Esporta Fitness, City Sports Club, and Club Studio, which run more than 600 clubs with 3.7 million members, per the complaint.

The FTC alleges the cancellation setup violates the FTC Act and ROSCA: a form kept behind a login, submission limited to certified mail or one specific employee during limited hours, and phone and email requests routinely denied. A complaint is a set of allegations, not court findings; the company gets to answer them, and the case is pending as of early September 2026, with no settlement or ruling reported. If one lands, it could add an easier cancellation path overnight, so a quick news search before you mail anything is worth ten seconds.

The FTC is asking for an injunction and refunds to consumers. Until something changes, the process below is the one members actually face.

Can you cancel LA Fitness online?

Not in the general case. There was no cancel button on the website or in the app chain-wide as of the FTC's filing in August 2025, and none has been reported since, through early September 2026. The website's role is narrower: it's where you print the form.

Two real exceptions, covered further down: New York members, and California members who signed up online, both protected by state law. The FTC's complaint itself notes that LA Fitness honors other methods "in states that mandate certain methods" and when complaints escalate to a state attorney general or the Better Business Bureau.

Step 1: print the LA Fitness cancellation form

  1. Log in at lafitness.com and open "My LA Fitness", the account portal.
  2. Go to "Account Information".
  3. Find the "Cancellation Form" and print it.
  4. Fill it out completely: your name, membership or agreement number, and contact information. Then sign it. Unsigned forms get rejected.

The form only exists behind the login; the FTC's complaint calls it "a non-publicly accessible section" of the website. If you signed up in-club and never registered online, create the account first, or ask for the form at your club.

Step 2: submit the form (only two ways count)

By certified mail: send the signed form to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619-4170. LA Fitness itself recommends registered or certified mail. Keep a copy of the form, the mailing receipt, and the return receipt. Send the actual form, not just a letter; LA Fitness doesn't say whether a bare letter is honored, and this is not the company to hand a technicality.

In person: hand the form to the Operations Manager at your club. Per the FTC's allegations, only that employee takes it, and only during business hours, reported as Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., even though clubs are open far longer. If the Operations Manager is out, you can be turned away; front-desk staff can't process it. When you do hand it over, get a dated receipt, or an email or text confirmation, before you leave.

The deadline: 5 business days before your billing date

Your cancellation must be postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date. Weekends and holidays don't count. Land inside that window and you may be billed one more time; LA Fitness's stated rule is that it refunds that extra charge once the cancellation processes. Your billing date is specific to your agreement, so check the portal or your paperwork before you time the mail.

Just signed up? Most state health-studio laws give you about 3 business days to rescind a brand-new contract entirely, and New York's February 2025 law makes that explicit.

Worth knowing

Count backward from your billing date and skip weekends: the form must be postmarked at least 5 business days before it. Miss the window and you'll see one more charge, which LA Fitness says it refunds, but you'll be the one watching the statement to make sure.

The separate-contracts trap: personal training keeps billing

Canceling your membership does not touch a personal training contract. PT, sold as "Pro Results", is its own agreement with its own recurring billing, commonly on 6 to 12 month terms, and it survives your membership cancellation. Per the FTC's allegations, childcare and towel service ride separate forms too, and the FTC alleges the company doesn't adequately disclose that. The complaint also alleges billing sometimes continued through new payment methods after members revoked authorization.

To cancel PT, submit its own written cancellation: in person (ask for the personal training cancellation form) or by certified mail. Include your name, membership number, and training agreement number. Phone and email don't work here either. Ask for written confirmation, and watch your next two or three statements.

Ending a PT contract early commonly costs about half of what remains on the agreement. That figure shows up consistently in member reports, but it isn't guaranteed to be universal; the buyout terms are printed on each PT agreement, so read your own cancellation clause before assuming the number. A just-signed PT agreement can usually be rescinded within about 3 business days under the same state laws.

Worth knowing

The membership and the training contract end separately. Cancel only the membership and the PT line keeps charging; it's the classic "why am I still being billed" story at LA Fitness.

What are the ways you cannot cancel?

  • Not by phone, as a standard path. The FTC alleges LA Fitness "routinely den[ies]" phone cancellation requests.
  • Not by email, same allegation. The (949) 255-7200 number and [email protected] address you'll see in some guides are member-services and escalation contacts, not a dependable cancel path outside the state-law states.
  • Not by stopping the payment at your bank. The membership stays open, the balance grows, and unpaid balances can go to collections.

If you want a break rather than an exit, LA Fitness offers a freeze for about $10 per month, with no set end date.

If you're in California or New York, the law is on your side

California: AB 2863, with key provisions effective July 1, 2025, requires cancellation to be available by the same method you used to sign up. If you joined online in California, LA Fitness must let you cancel online.

New York: the state's gym law effective February 1, 2025 requires gyms to accept cancellation by website, email, telephone, mail, or in person, and to process it within 10 business days. It also gives you 3 days to rescind a new contract penalty-free.

If a club refuses in these states, name the law: AB 2863 in California, the February 2025 gym amendment in New York. The FTC's complaint says LA Fitness does deviate from its standard process where state law mandates other methods. All of this is as of early September 2026; state rules in this area are moving fast.

Canceling Esporta, City Sports Club, or Club Studio

Esporta shares more than a parent company: it uses the identical portal form and the same P.O. Box 54170 in Irvine, so everything on this page applies to Esporta as written. City Sports Club and Club Studio share the same parent (Fitness International) and are named in the same FTC complaint, but we have not verified their exact form paths; confirm the form in your club's member portal before mailing anything.

What happens after you cancel?

Keep your proof: the form copy with the certified-mail receipt and return receipt, or the dated receipt or message from the Operations Manager. Then watch two to three billing cycles, and check the membership line and any PT or add-on lines separately. They're separate contracts, so one can end while another keeps charging.

Billing is in-house through Fitness International, LLC; statements show "LA FITNESS" or "Fitness Intl". A balance that goes unpaid can be sent to a third-party collection agency, and a reported collection can sit on your credit reports for up to 7 years. The usual source is an annual fee or a PT balance that kept accruing after a cancellation that didn't stick. The paperwork you kept is what un-sticks it.

What if they make it hard anyway?

Escalation genuinely moves LA Fitness: by the FTC's own account, complaints routed through a state attorney general or the BBB get non-standard cancellations honored. Start with our guide to canceling any subscription for the escalation ladder and scripts. If you were charged after canceling, the refund playbook covers gym charges, and remember the inside-the-window refund rule above. A bank-side stop payment is the last resort, because the balance keeps accruing underneath it.

One gym that can hold three separate contracts is also a good argument for a full subscription audit, so nothing else is billing on an agreement you forgot existed.

Membership, training, and add-ons can each put their own line on your statement, and they all read as "LA FITNESS" or "Fitness Intl". ReNood reads a screenshot of your statement, no bank login, and flags each recurring charge separately, so you can see exactly which contract is still alive. Worth doing before you mail the form.

FAQ

Can I cancel LA Fitness online?

Generally no. As of the FTC's August 2025 lawsuit filing there's no chain-wide online cancellation; the website is where you print the Cancellation Form. The exceptions: New York members can cancel by website, email, phone, mail, or in person under the state's February 2025 law, and Californians who signed up online must be offered online cancellation under AB 2863.

Where do I mail the LA Fitness cancellation form?

P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619-4170. Use certified or registered mail, which LA Fitness itself recommends, and mail the printed, signed portal form rather than a plain letter. Keep the form copy, mailing receipt, and return receipt, and postmark it at least 5 business days before your billing date. The same address serves Esporta cancellations.

Why am I still being charged after canceling LA Fitness?

Three usual causes. A separate personal training or add-on contract is still active, which is the classic one. Your form arrived inside the 5-business-day window, so one more charge went through; LA Fitness says that one is refunded. Or the form was incomplete or unsigned and never processed. Match the statement line to the contract, then submit the missing form or chase the refund with your proof.

Does canceling my membership cancel personal training?

No. Personal training is a separate contract that needs its own written cancellation, in person or by certified mail, with your training agreement number on it. Ending it early commonly costs about half of what remains, though your agreement's clause controls. Watch your statements for two or three cycles after both cancellations.
