Why is canceling LA Fitness so hard?

The FTC alleges the cancellation setup violates the FTC Act and ROSCA: a form kept behind a login, submission limited to certified mail or one specific employee during limited hours, and phone and email requests routinely denied. A complaint is a set of allegations, not court findings; the company gets to answer them, and the case is pending as of early September 2026, with no settlement or ruling reported. If one lands, it could add an easier cancellation path overnight, so a quick news search before you mail anything is worth ten seconds.

The FTC is asking for an injunction and refunds to consumers. One thing has already changed since the filing: the cancellation answer on lafitness.com now documents routes the complaint said were missing, including online cancellation and in-person cancellation at the front desk. Whether the lawsuit prompted the rewrite is not stated anywhere; what matters for you is that the easier wording is the official process now, and it is what this page follows.

Can you cancel LA Fitness online?

For most memberships, yes, and this is a change worth knowing about. The official membership FAQ now says most club memberships are month-to-month and may be cancelled "via your online account or as may otherwise be provided in your agreement (for example, depending on your state of enrollment, you may be able to cancel by email)."

So start there: sign in at lafitness.com, open "My LA Fitness", and look for the cancellation option in your account. Complete every step and screenshot the confirmation. If no cancellation option appears for your agreement, the two routes below are also official.

For context: when the FTC filed in August 2025, its complaint described no chain-wide online cancellation. The FAQ's current wording documents one, and the state-law rights covered further down still apply on top of it.

The other two official routes: front desk or mail

In person: the FAQ's instruction is now simply "in person at a club (please see the front desk)." Bring your membership number, ask for a dated receipt or an email or text confirmation, and do not leave without one. (The FTC's complaint alleged the old process required one specific Operations Manager during limited weekday hours; the current official wording names the front desk instead.)

By mail: the FAQ asks for "written notice of cancellation" to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619-4170, and LA Fitness itself "recommend[s] registered or certified mail and keeping a record for your files." The deadline: 5 business days before your billing date

A mailed cancellation must be postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date. Weekends and holidays don't count. Land inside that window and you may be billed one more time; LA Fitness's stated rule is that it refunds that extra charge once the cancellation processes. No equivalent cutoff is published for the online or front-desk routes, so give every route margin before your billing date rather than testing it. What if your agreement has an initial term?

The FAQ splits agreements with an initial term of three months or more into three cases: outside the initial term, you cancel any time through the routes above; still inside it, your cancellation takes effect when the initial term ends; and ending it before the term ends triggers a termination fee. The separate-contracts trap: personal training keeps billing

Canceling your membership does not touch a personal training contract. PT, sold as "Pro Results", is its own agreement with its own recurring billing, commonly on 6 to 12 month terms, and it survives your membership cancellation. Per the FTC's allegations, childcare and towel service ride separate forms too, and the FTC alleges the company doesn't adequately disclose that. The complaint also alleges billing sometimes continued through new payment methods after members revoked authorization.

To cancel PT, submit its own written cancellation: in person (ask for the personal training cancellation form) or by certified mail. Include your name, membership number, and training agreement number. Phone and email don't work here either. Ask for written confirmation, and watch your next two or three statements.

Ending a PT contract early commonly costs about half of what remains on the agreement. That figure shows up consistently in member reports, but it isn't guaranteed to be universal; the buyout terms are printed on each PT agreement, so read your own cancellation clause before assuming the number.
