How to Cancel HBO Max, No Matter Who Bills You

Quick answer

Check who bills you first: sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription and the biller is shown at the top of the screen. Billed by HBO Max directly? Choose "Cancel Your Subscription" there and confirm. Billed through Roku, Amazon, Apple, or a cable plan? Cancel with that company instead. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date, and know that deleting the app cancels nothing.

HBO Max at a glance

Basic with Ads $10.99/mo or $109.99/yr
Standard $18.49/mo or $184.99/yr
Premium $22.99/mo or $229.99/yr
Billed through HBOMax.com directly, or one of 20-plus third parties (Roku, Amazon, Apple legacy, carriers, cable)
Refund stance "There is a no refund policy" for direct billing; third parties follow their own rules
Pause option None; the official help documents only Cancel and Resume
The deadline Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date

Prices are the October 21, 2025 set, still current in a September 1, 2026 capture of the official plans page; tax is extra, and Live Sports needs Standard or Premium. If your statement still says Max, same service: the mid-2025 rename put the HBO back.

Who actually bills your HBO Max?

HBO Max sells through more storefronts than almost any other streamer, so where you signed up decides where the cancel lives. Step one is a lookup, not a cancellation:

  1. Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in. In the app, tap your profile, then "Subscription"; on a TV, the Settings icon, then "Subscription."
  2. Read the top of the screen: your biller is shown there.
  3. A cancel option means you are billed directly (next section); none means a third party bills you, so jump to the fork table below.

One quiet rule from the help pages: only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions, so switch profiles if the menu is missing.

How do you cancel HBO Max on the web?

For subscriptions billed by HBO Max (WarnerMedia) directly, the official steps:

  1. Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in.
  2. Choose "Cancel Your Subscription."
  3. Confirm the cancellation and note the expiration date it shows you.

A confirmation email follows, and the help pages spell out the rest: the subscription auto-renews until you cancel, canceling the base plan also cancels add-ons, and a "Resume Your Subscription" button appears if you change your mind before expiry. One line gets quoted verbatim because so many people test it: "Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel your subscription."

Worth knowing

HBO Max says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge. Run the who-bills-you check first: cancel in the wrong storefront and the real subscription renews on schedule.

How do you cancel HBO Max on Roku, Amazon, or another biller?

New plans currently sell through HBOMax.com, Amazon's Appstore, Cox, Prime Video Channels, Roku, Samsung, Xfinity, and Xumo; legacy billing survives at Apple, Google Play, and the carriers. Every row below comes from HBO Max's own per-biller instructions (help captures, May and June 2026):

You pay through Where the cancel lives
Roku my.roku.com/subscriptions, HBO Max, "Manage subscription," turn off auto-renew
Amazon Appstore amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, Your Subscriptions, HBO Max, turn off auto-renewal
Prime Video Channels "Manage Your Prime Video Channels," Your Channels, "Cancel Channel"
Apple (legacy) iPhone or iPad Settings, your name, "Subscriptions," HBO Max, "Cancel Subscription"
Google Play (legacy) Play Store, profile icon, "Payments & subscriptions," "Subscriptions," "Cancel subscription"
Samsung TV samsungcheckout.com, Purchase History, Subscriptions, "Unsubscribe"
Xumo xumo.com/subscriptions, HBO Max, "Cancel now"
Hulu (as a Hulu add-on) hulu.com/account, "Manage Add-ons," toggle HBO Max off, "Review Changes"
YouTube TV tv.youtube.com, profile, Settings, "Membership," HBO Max, "Cancel"
YouTube Primetime Channels youtube.com/paid_memberships, Digital purchases & rentals, HBO Max, "Deactivate"
Verizon (myPlan perk) My Verizon app, Account, Plans, "Add or remove perks"
Cable and carriers AT&T, Cox, DIRECTV, DISH, Optimum, Sling TV, Spectrum, Verizon Fios and +play, Xfinity, Cricket: cancel inside that provider's account
DoorDash (DashPass) Standard comes with DashPass; access runs until the DashPass annual cycle ends

Roku quirks beyond this table live in canceling Roku subscriptions, Apple's in managing iPhone subscriptions.

The included-with-a-plan cases trip people up: Spectrum's TV Select Signature and Plus tiers and Cricket's Unlimited plan include Basic with Ads, and DashPass includes Standard. There is nothing to cancel at HBO Max; you change or drop the underlying plan with that provider.

What is the Apple catch?

As of March 9, 2026, Apple billing is closed to newcomers. The official help page (captured June 2026) says it plainly: "Apple billing is no longer available for new or returning subscribers. Any new subscription started on an Apple device is billed directly through us (WarnerMedia). This change doesn't impact existing Apple-billed subscribers."

In practice: subscribed through Apple before the cutoff, and your cancel still lives in Apple's Settings under "Subscriptions," with Apple's refund rules attached. Subscribed after that date, and you are direct-billed even on an iPhone, so the cancel lives at HBOMax.com/subscription. Google Play looks similar: it is missing from the current sold-through list, though HBO Max has published no cutoff date for it the way it did for Apple. Existing Play-billed subscriptions still cancel in the Play Store.

Can you pause HBO Max instead?

No. There is no pause or hold in the official help: across the manage and cancel pages (captures, February through June 2026), the only states are Cancel and Resume. Older guides claiming a pause echo 2024 and 2025 press reports of tests; no HBO Max page documents one as of September 2026, so plan around cancel and resume.

The documented cheaper move is changing plans (that has its own help page): Basic with Ads runs $10.99/mo against Premium's $22.99/mo.

What retention offers will you see?

Subscribers regularly report a discount pitch in the web cancel flow, but no official page documents one, so treat it as a maybe rather than a plan. Offers of that kind vary by account and by month, which is why no fixed number belongs here. If one appears and price pushed you here, taking a real discount is a fair outcome, not a defeat; just note when the normal price returns.

Will HBO Max give you a refund?

For direct billing, the official policy is one sentence: "There is a no refund policy for subscriptions billed through HBO Max." Canceling stops future charges; the period you paid for runs out on schedule. Third-party billing follows that biller's rules instead; the refund page points to Amazon, Apple, Google Play, and Roku policies, and sends Samsung-billed subscribers to HBO Max support.

The one exception: the Extra Member Add-On. When the base plan expires, remaining paid add-on time is refunded pro-rata, the only proration HBO Max offers.

What about the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle?

The bundle ($19.99/mo with ads, $32.99/mo without; no Premium tier inside it) cancels with whichever company bills you. The HBO side works like this guide; a Disney-billed bundle follows Disney's rules, including canceling at least 24 hours before your renewal date. See how to cancel Disney+.

What happens after you cancel?

  • Streaming continues until the end of the paid period; the expiration date shows at confirmation and in the email.
  • The account survives, profiles and watchlist included; an expired account just gets a renew prompt at the next sign-in. No time limit on that is stated.
  • Change your mind before the expiration date and "Resume Your Subscription" undoes the cancel.

What if you hit a wall?

The wall cases here are routing-shaped: a biller you cannot identify, or a charge that lands after you canceled in the wrong place. How to cancel any subscription covers escalation, the refund playbook covers charges already taken, and stopping automatic payments at the bank is the last resort.

Half the work of canceling HBO Max is finding out who actually takes your money, and that question repeats for every subscription on the card. ReNood reads a screenshot of your statement and lists each recurring charge it finds, no bank login, so the biller hunt happens once, not every cancel.

FAQ

How do I find out who bills my HBO Max?

Sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription: the biller is shown at the top of the screen. In the app, tap your profile, then "Subscription"; on a TV, the Settings icon, then "Subscription." If no cancel option appears, a third party owns the billing, and the storefront you signed up through (Roku, Amazon, Apple, a cable account) is where the cancel lives.

Can I pause HBO Max?

No. The official help documents exactly two states, Cancel and Resume, with no pause or hold anywhere in the pages captured through mid-2026. Guides claiming a pause echo 2024-2025 reports of tests that nothing official supports today. The closest documented move is switching plans, with Basic with Ads at $10.99/mo on the bottom rung.

Why can't I cancel on the website?

Two reasons. First, a third party bills you: HBOMax.com shows no cancel option when Roku, Amazon, Apple, Google Play, or a TV provider owns the billing, so the cancel lives in that account instead. Second, profiles: only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions, and a Kid profile hides the menu. Check HBOMax.com/subscription on an Adult profile to see your biller.

Will I get a refund?

Not from HBO Max directly: "There is a no refund policy for subscriptions billed through HBO Max." You keep access until the end of the period you paid for. Third-party billing follows that company's refund rules instead. The lone exception is the Extra Member Add-On, refunded pro-rata for unused time when the base plan expires.
